The building has a closed cross plan with
Byzantine
architectural features . The masonry of the building consists entirely of bricks . The exterior of the building is characterized by the half cylindrical buttresses on its surface . In the Ottoman period , a wooden portico was built as well as a stone minaret that is close to the narthex . The building was originally decorated with a marble revetment and mosaics which no longer exist today .
The inner surface has a plain look apart from the simple motifs on arches . In the middle section of the structure , there is the nave (naos) roofed with an umbrella dome . The drum of the dome is interrupted by arched windows . This appearance gives an undulating rhythmus . The four side naves are covered by barrel vaults . There is a narthex to the west and a sanctuary to the east . The narthex has a central bay covered by a dome and two side bays covered by cross vaults . There are four piers partitioning the nave , which substituted the original columns in the Ottoman period . The building is well-lit in the inside by many openings of the windows and arches .
