Architecture of Gul Mosque

The building has a cross plan oriented northwest – southeast and is 26 meters long and 20 meters wide . It has five domes , one large dome with an octagonal drum and no windows is located above the central nave and the other four smaller ones are located above the four corners . The central dome , which is Ottoman , is carried on a broad pointed arches . The mosque has a minaret at the western corner which was rebuilt in baroque style after the earthquake of 1766 . Five tiers of windows on the side facades illuminate the inside of the mosque . There is a wooden minber , muezzin's platform and a preacher's pulpit which were all added after the conversion . The interior is largely decorated with plastered 18th century Ottoman paintwork .

On the exterior of the building , on the southeastern façade , there is the central apse with seven sides , that seems to belong to the later Byzantine style . The lateral apses have three sides only . There is also a cornice that runs above the niches .
