Beyazıt Tower is located in the courtyard of
Istanbul
University’s main campus on Beyazit square . The tower is a 85 metres tall fire-watch tower . On its place , there was originally a previous tower of wooden material but it was destroyed in a fire . Sultan Mahmut II had ordered the construction of Beyazit tower to be built by Senekerim Balyan on the place of the previous one in 1828 as a stone tower . The observation floor of that tower was circular in shape , measuring about 50 m² , and rises on the cylinder body of the tower . The roof of the tower was originally in the shape of a cone , but it was later changed in 1849 and turned into octagon plan with an addition of three floors with windows . The smaller diameter of these three floors makes space for a terrace at the second floor . The earthquake of 1889 damaged the tower partly , but it was subsequently restored , and Today , the tower has a stone roof and a wooden staircase consisting of 256 steps .
