Eyup Sultan Mosque
Native name: Eyup Sultan Camii
Eyup Sultan Mosque is located at the point where Kalender Hane Avenue and Camii Kebir Street intersect , in the district of Eyüp on the European side of İstanbul . It was built in 1458 by Mehmet the Conqueror and thus considered the first mosque constructed by the Ottoman Turks following the conquest of Constantinople in 1453 . At the same spot of the mosque , Ebu Eyyub EI-Ensari (HaIid Bin Zeyd) was buried . He was the one who welcomed prophet Muhammed to his home when the prophet was immigrating to Medina . Later , he joined the siege of Istanbul in the 7th century . He was killed during the siege and was buried , upon his will , on the outskirts of the city in 670 . The peace treaty after the Arab siege had conditioned that the tomb of Eyyub be preserved in its place . When Mehmet the Conqueror conquered Constantinople in 1453 , he constructed the mosque upon Ebu Eyyub's tomb in 1458 . Considered to be the last survivor of the prophet's inner circle of trusted companions , Ebu Eyyub El-Ensari is greatly venerated by Muslims and his tomb attracts many visitors . His mosque is considered the holiest site in Istanbul and one of the most sacred places in the The outside courtyard which includes the mosque and the tomb can be entered from one of two doors , one on the southeast and the other on the southwest . In the middle of the courtyard stands a marble fountain . The royal compartment of the mosque can be reached form the southeast door which opens to the platform leading up to it . The area of the mosque is crowded with visitors . Crowds can also be seen relaxing by the spray of the fountains in the courtyard of the mosque . There is also a small bazaar near the mosque . |
