Fatih Mosque

Native Name: Fatih Camii

The great Fatih mosque was constructed during the period of Fatih Sultan Mehmet between 1463 and 1470 with Kiilliye structures surrounding it . The Mosque is located in the Fatih district of Istanbul . It is considered the largest example of Turkish - Islamic architecture and represents an important phase in the development of classic Turkish architecture . The place of the mosque was originally the place of Havariyyun church ruins which was one of the most important churches in the city . The church once contained the graveyards of many Byzantine emperors among whom is Constantine the Great who changed the capital of Rome to be in Istanbul .

The monastery of Havanyyun Church was moved to Pammakaristos Church (Fethiye Mosque) in 1455 and In its place the Kiilliye structures started to be built . The architect who designed the building is a great architect named Atik Sinan . The original complex consisted of a set of social and educational institutions located around the mosque . These buildings include eight medrese , library , hospital , hospice , caravanserai , market , hamam , primary school and public kitchen (imaret) which served food to the poor around the area . The construction works took about 7 years . Not all the structures including the first mosque have reached today .
