Native name: Fatih Sultan Mehmet Koprusu
Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge (known also as the Second Bosphorus Bridge) is the second hanging bridge that connects the European and Asian coasts of Istanbul . The bridge is named after Ottoman Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror , who opened Constantinople in 1453 and ended the
Byzantine
Empire . The bridge was designed by Freeman Fox & Partners , an international consortium , which had designed previously the Bosphorus Bridge . Construction of the bridge started in 1985 and it was completed and opened on July , 1988 , with a total cost that reached USD 130 million .
Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge is 1510m in length between Hisarüstü (European side) and Kavacık (Asian side) . The distance between its two carrier towers is 1090m , and its highest point is 64m . It is a gravity-anchored suspension bridge with steel pylons and inclined hangers . The deck is hanging on double vertical steel cables and has a width of 39m . The construction technique is similar to that of the Bosphorus Bridge and only differs in the vertical arrangement of the hanging cables which connects the main cables with the apron and are double lined .
