Anadolu Kavagi



Anadolu Kavagi was a Byzantine fortress along with other fortress called Rumeli Kavagi, located on the European side of the Bosporus. They were later acquired by the Genoese and the two fortresses were located near the northern mouth of the Bosporus overlooking the black sea. Anadolu Kavagi (most probably meaning Anatolian oak) was located on a promontory and thus was having a strategic location providing an excellent view over the Black Sea. In the past, a chain used to be laid between the two fortresses in order to block the passage of any ships belonging to enemies, however today, there is no longer an evidence left of the fortress (Rumeli Kavagi) which once existed on the European side.
