Beyazıt Tower is located in the courtyard of Istanbul University’s main campus on Beyazit square. The tower is a 85 metres tall fire-watch tower. On its place, there was originally a previous tower of wooden material but it was destroyed in a fire. Sultan Mahmut II had ordered the construction of Beyazit tower to be built by Senekerim Balyan on the place of the previous one in 1828 as a stone tower. The observation floor of that tower was circular in shape, measuring about 50 m², and rises on the cylinder body of the tower.
