The museum is situated in Besiktas, near the mausoleum and statue of Barbaros Hayreddin, the famous Turkish admiral of the 16th century. Sea museum, or naval museum, was built in 1897 and was transferred to its current location in 1961. The museum consists of two buildings and a garden. Inside the large building, there are old boats exhibited, while in the smaller rooms and halls of the three-storied main building, there are displayed equipment and furniture from old ships, model ships, and parts of the private yacht of Ataturk.
