German Fountain



Native name: Alman Çeşmesi The German Fountain is located in the northern end of old hippodrome (Sultanahmet Square) and across from the Mausoleum of Sultan Ahmed I. It was constructed to commemorate the second visit of the German Emperor Wilhelm II to Istanbul in 1898. The fountain was built in Germany and then it was transported in pieces to Istanbul, to be assembled in its current site in 1900. It has an octagonal dome that rises on eight marble columns. The dome is covered from the inside with golden mosaics . There are eight medallion situated on the arches between columns, four of them carry the signature of Sultan Abdulhamit on green background, while on the other four medallions the letter "W" on Prussian blue background appears and is a symbol of Emperor Wilhelm II.
