Gulhane Park (meaning in Persian “Rosehouse Park”) is located adjacent to the Topkapı Palace; actually the south entrance of the park sports one of the larger gates of the palace, in the Eminönü district of Istanbul. It is the oldest public parks in Istanbul. The park was once part of the garden of Topkapı Palace. Part of the outer garden of Topkapi Palace was planned to be a public park and it was opened 1912 to the public. The park originally contained recreation areas, coffee houses, playgrounds as well as a small zoo that was opened within the park later, however recently the small zoo was removed to provide for an increase in open space.
