Kadikoy is a district located on the Asian shore of the Bosphorus just south of Haydarpasa. It was known in Byzantine times as Khalkedon. Kadikoy has a history that goes as far back as 680 B.C. when the Megarians were the first to settle here, and they founded Khalkedon. Because of its being one of the important centers at that time, it hosted the Khalkedon Council in 451. After the end of Byzantine state, Kadikoy became a village that earns its living with agriculture and fishing. The name Kadikoy is acquired to it because Mehmet, the Conqueror gave the district to Hizir Bey who was a ‘kadi’ (Muslim judge) of Istanbul after the conquest of Istanbul.
