Mahmut II Tomb



Native name: Mahmut II Turbesi Sultan Mahmut II is known by his leading innovations in the modernization of Ottoman State in the military, educational, administrative and social aspects. His reign lasted for 30 from 1808 to 1839 when he died as a result of an illness. The tomb of Mahmut II has am octagon plan and is covered with rich floral reliefs with a diameter of 17 meters which constitutes a direct bulge towards Divanyolu Avenue. There is a water fountain built with the tomb and can be found Towards Sultanahmet side. In this tomb, Mahmut II (1808¬1839), Abdulaziz (1861-1876) and Abdulhamit II (l876¬1909) are buried. There is a courtyard next to the tomb that was turned into graveyard in 1861. The graveyard contains graves of important officials, authors and poets.
