Uskudar



Usküdar is a district of Istanbul located on the Asian shore of the Bosphorus, opposite the heart of the great city, next to Kadikoy. It is a large and densely populated district with about half a million people. Uskudar was called Khrysopolis (Golden City) in ancient times, because taxes were stored in a treasury there. In this district, there is the pier and dockyard of Khalkedon (Kadikoy) which was founded in 7th century B.C. The district of Uskudar was politically important during the Byzantine period because it was often the starting point of many revolutions that resulted in change of emperors. One century before Ottoman conquered Istanbul, Uskudar was taken control of along with Kadikoy by Orhan Gazi (1324-1360), the second sultan of Ottoman Empire.
