Native name: Gülhane Parkı
Gulhane Park (meaning in Persian “Rosehouse Park”) is located adjacent to the Topkapı Palace; actually the south entrance of the park sports one of the larger gates of the palace , in the Eminönü district of Istanbul . It is the oldest public parks in Istanbul . The park was once part of the garden of Topkapı Palace . Part of the outer garden of Topkapi Palace was planned to be a public park and it was opened 1912 to the public . The park originally contained recreation areas , coffee houses , playgrounds as well as a small zoo that was opened within the park later , however recently the small zoo was removed to provide for an increase in open space . At the park also stands the first statue of Atatürk in Turkey which was erected by Heinrich Krippel in 1926 .
Many renovation works took place in the park in recent years . The inside routes were re-arranged and the big pool was renovated in a modern style . The park finally regained the natural landscape of the 1950s with its trees dating from the 1800s .
