Hurrem sultan (Roxelana) was the wife of Suleyman the Magnificent who ascended the throne in 1520 . She was one of the most outstanding examples of powerful women in the Ottoman Empire . In 1521 , she gave birth to Shehzade Mehmet and thus gained the right to be the wife of the sultan . She had one only daughter , Mihrimah Sultan , and five male children among which there was Selim II who ascended the throne and became the sultan later .
After the death of Hafsa Sultan , the mother of sultan Suleyman , Hurrem Sultan gained prominence in the palace . She was involved in various conspiracies to pave the way to the throne for her sons and it is believed that she had an upper hand in the killing of Shehzade Mostafa , the son of Suleyman who was loved by everybody , by drowning . Hurrem Sultan died in 1558 and buried to the graveyard of Suleymaniye Mosque and then a tomb was made for her , half of which is ornamented by tiles . Among the burials here besides Hurrem Sultan were the son of Selim II , the grandson of Hurem Shehzade Mehmet , and Hatice Sultan , sister of Sultan Suleyman .
