Kanuni Sultan Suleyman (also known as Suleyman the Magnificent) was the son of Yavus Sultan Selim . He ascended the throne on September 1520 . During his long reign of 47 years , he succeeded in making the ottoman empire the most powerful one in the whole world . He conquered Belgrade in 1521 , Rhodes in 1522 and Hungary in 1526 . In his reign , because of the various victories and lands he acquired in the Middle East and Africa , the Mediterranean has become wholly a Turkish lake . His armies succeeded to take the Szigetvar castle after a long siege , but he died on his way before reaching the conquered castle . Because of the state of wars , the news of the death of the sultan was kept as a secret for a while . He was buried in his tomb at the graveyard of Suleymaniye Mosque . Also buried at the same place the sultan’s daughter Mihrimah Sultan , Ahmed II and his wife Rahia Sultan and Suleyman II .
