Native name: Mihrimah Sultan Camii
Mihrimah Sultan Mosque at Edirnekapi is located at Edirnekapi neighborhood next the old city walls , near the Chora church museum , on the European side of Istanbul .
Mihrimah Sultan had the mosque built by architect Mimar Sinan . The construction date is not evident because the building does not have an epigraph , however it is assumed that it was completed around 1560 .
The main location of the mosque has a linear rectangular plan that measures 28m x 40m . A large dome with a diameter of more than 20 and about 37 meters high covers the middle section while three other small domes cover the side naves . The four columns carrying the main dome are hidden inside the inner place and apparent from the outside . The ornaments are new and belong to the restoration in 1957 . There are some 161 windows inside which allow enough light to enter and illuminate the inside of the mosque . Wooden windows shutters and doors are inlaid with mother of pearl and ivory . The Minber and the Mihrab are both made of stone and are considered the finest examples of the period . The interior decoration is simple but impressive as well , they were repaired and enhanced during the restoration works under the reign of sultan Abdülhamit . There is
a tomb in the mosque where the son-in-law of Mihrimah Sultan Glizel Ahmet Pasha is buried . Mihrimah Sultan was buried at Slileymaniye Mosque , next to Kanuni . The mosque has a single minaret .
