Mimar Sinan is the greatest Ottoman architect of the Ottoman Empire who was born in 1490 . When Sinan was 22 , he was recruited into the Corps of Ottoman Standing Troops (Janissary) . He has a military tour throughout the empire which has greatly inspired his imagination and design abilities . He toured Baghdad , Damascus , Persia and
Egypt
as well as other parts of the large Ottoman empire . In 1538 , he built a bridge over Prut River for which he received a lot of favor and attention .
Under Sultan Suleyman , Sinan was appointed to the position of State Architect . During his life , Sinan designed more than 360 structures , included 84 major mosques , 51 small mosques (mescit) , 57 religious schools (medreses) , 7 seminaries , 22 mausoleums (turbe) 17 care facility , 3 asylums , 7 aqueducts , 46 inns , 35 palaces and mansions and 42 public baths (hamams) . Sinan absorbed the designs and architecture of previous structures and added his creativity to create new magnificent works . The first work appointed to him was Sehzade Mosque , while his masterpiece is believed to be Selimiye Mosque at Edime (1569-75) . The great architect Sinan died in 1588 and was buried in a modest
tomb that he designed for himself which is located on the north of Suleymaniye Mosque at the point where Mimar Sinan Avenue and Fetva Yokuu Street intersect .
