Nusretiye Mosque meaning “Victory” is located in Necati Bey Street in Tophane Neighborhood of Beyoglu District on the Western shore of the Bosphorus . It was constructed by Mahmud II (1784-1839) between 1823 and 1826 by architect Krikor Balyan , as part of a larger project to rebuild the Tophane artillery barracks that were burnt down by fire . The mosque was built in celebration of the sultan's victory over the rebellious janissary troops in favor of a new western-style army (this is known in Ottoman history as Vaka-i Hayriye or the auspicious event) .
The mosque is oriented along the northwest-southeast axis . It consists of a prayer hall , a mihrab apse , and a large sultan lodge , which wraps the west and north corners at the front . There are side arcades with domed bays flanking the prayer hall on the exterior . A few steps below the courtyard , there is a side arcade . The arcade on the southwest has two-stories and has a door at the lower colonnade which leads down to the basement level .
Inside the mosque , the prayer hall
is covered with a single dome which is raised on four grand arches that spring from the four corners . The dome has a diameter of 7 , 5m and extends through northwest with the last place for congregation . The frontals of the lower windows are adorned with leaf patterned embossments . Upper windows are accentulied with geometric patterned borders . The sultan's lodge is located along the southwest wall of the mosque , at the right of the mosque entrance .
