The museum is situated in Besiktas , near the mausoleum and statue of Barbaros Hayreddin , the famous Turkish admiral of the 16th century . Sea museum , or naval museum , was built in 1897 and was transferred to its current location in 1961 . The museum consists of two buildings and a garden . Inside the large building , there are old boats exhibited , while in the smaller rooms and halls of the three-storied main building , there are displayed equipment and furniture from old ships , model ships , and parts of the private yacht of Ataturk . The walls are decorated with paintings depicting various naval events . Also , old cannons , banners , and weapons used in different centuries can be seen in the top floor . At the basement , there are parts and sections of ships which served in the Turkish navy , as well as the torpedoes . The collection also includes naval uniforms which are displayed on mannequins .
There are many valuable boats in the Historical Boats Exhibition in another building reached from another entrance on the seaward side . In this building , the galley of Mehmet IV (1648-87) and other sovereignty galley collection are displayed . The garden of the museum is part of
the museum where there are different collections exhibited as well like part of the ruins of German submarine which was submerged in 1916 and canon used in Sultan Selim's
Egypt
campaign in 1516 .
