Native name: Sehzade Camii
Sehzade Mosque is located on the third hill of Istanbul . It is also known as the “Prince's Mosque” . It was built by Sultan Suleiman I in memory of his eldest son , Prince Mehmet , who died a sudden death at the age of 21 in 1543 . The building was the first major structure that was designed by the great Imperial Architect Mimar Sinan . The construction was completed in 1548 and is considered by historians as Sinan's first masterpiece of classical Ottoman architecture .
The mosque is surrounded by an inner colonnaded courtyard with a size equal to that of the mosque itself . The courtyard is bordered by a portico with five domed bays on each side , with arches in alternating pink and white marble . An ablution fountain is located at the center of the courtyard . There are two Minarets with two balconies rising at both edges of the Last Congregation Place . The main area of the mosque is covered with a central dome with a width of 19m . The main dome is supported by four half domes . The feet carrying the main dome from four sides are like weight towers surrounding the dome from four sides outside . The building is ornamented by pen crafts and colored glass filling at the passages from the corners .
