Yildiz Palace
Native name: Yildiz Sarayi
Yıldız Palace (meaning Star Palace) is located in the Beşiktaş district of Istanbul . It is a large complex of former imperial Ottoman pavilions , qasrs and kiosks that were built by different Sultans in the area that has been used mostly as hunting area beginning from the reign of Kanuni (1520¬66) . The first structure was built by Ahmet I and then the area around the building remained a forest till the beginning of the 19th century . Various sultans after Ahmed I enjoyed staying for hunting on these area and Sultans Abdülmecid I and Abdülaziz built mansions for themselves there . In the reign of SultanAbdülhamid II , in the late 19th century , the complex was extensively expanded , as Abdülhamid II decided to leave Dolmabahçe and moved to Yildiz Palace as he felt the former one is no longer safe for his residence . He expanded the Yıldız Palace and appointed the renowned Italian architect Raimondo D'Aronco to add new structures to the palace complex . The palace became then the fourth palace used by the Ottoman government , as the three previous ones were the Eski Saray (Old Palace) in Edirne , and the Topkapı and Dolmabahçe Palaces in Istanbul) . The complex of the palace consists of the State Apartments (Büyük Mabeyn) , Şale Pavilion , the Malta Pavilion , the Çadır Pavilion , the Yıldız Theater and Opera House , the Yıldız Palace Museum , and the Imperial Porcelain Factory . There are also the Yıldız Palace Gardens which are popular public site for the residents of Istanbul . A bridge connects the Yıldız Palace with the Çırağan Palace on the Bosphorus through this garden . Today , the palace is used as a museum and its gardens can be used for holding events , such as the Istanbul Antiques Fair at the Silahhane (Armoury) Hall , which usually takes place in November . Also located in the palace is the Istanbul office of the OIC .
