Sehzade Mosque is located on the third hill of Istanbul. It is also known as the “Prince's Mosque”. It was built by Sultan Suleiman I in memory of his eldest son, Prince Mehmet, who died a sudden death at the age of 21 in 1543. The building was the first major structure that was designed by the great Imperial Architect Mimar Sinan. The construction was completed in 1548 and is considered by historians as Sinan's first masterpiece of classical Ottoman architecture.
The mosque is surrounded by an inner colonnaded courtyard with a size equal to that of the mosque itself. The courtyard is bordered by a portico with five domed bays on each side, with arches in alternating pink and white marble. An ablution fountain is located at the center of the courtyard. ...
