Eyup Sultan Mosque



Native name: Eyup Sultan Camii Eyup Sultan Mosque is located at the point where Kalender Hane Avenue and Camii Kebir Street intersect, in the district of Eyüp on the European side of İstanbul. It was built in 1458 by Mehmet the Conqueror and thus considered the first mosque constructed by the Ottoman Turks following the conquest of Constantinople in 1453. At the same spot of the mosque, Ebu Eyyub EI-Ensari (HaIid Bin Zeyd) was buried. He was the one who welcomed prophet Muhammed to his home when the prophet was immigrating to Medina. Later, he joined the siege of Istanbul in the 7th century. He was killed during the siege and was buried, upon his will, on the outskirts of the city in 670.
