The great Fatih mosque was constructed during the period of Fatih Sultan Mehmet between 1463 and 1470 with Kiilliye structures surrounding it. The Mosque is located in the Fatih district of Istanbul. It is considered the largest example of Turkish - Islamic architecture and represents an important phase in the development of classic Turkish architecture. The place of the mosque was originally the place of Havariyyun church ruins which was one of the most important churches in the city. The church once contained the graveyards of many Byzantine emperors among whom is Constantine the Great who changed the capital of Rome to be in Istanbul.
