Anadolu Kavagi was a
Byzantine
fortress along with other fortress called Rumeli Kavagi , located on the European side of the Bosporus . They were later acquired by the Genoese and the two fortresses were located near the northern mouth of the Bosporus overlooking the black sea . Anadolu Kavagi (most probably meaning Anatolian oak) was located on a promontory and thus was having a strategic location providing an excellent view over the Black Sea . In the past , a chain used to be laid between the two fortresses in order to block the passage of any ships belonging to enemies , however today , there is no longer an evidence left of the fortress (Rumeli Kavagi) which once existed on the European side . Sultan Mehmet II acquired the fortresses from the Genoese soon after the conquest of Constantinople in 1453 .
The part of the castle that is open to visitors now is the upper part which is called (Yoros Castle) . The coast around the castle is a tourisic village with a lot fishermen restaurants , cafeterias , and a few souvenir stalls .
