Fethiye Mosque and Museum
Native name: Fethiye Camii Muzesi
Fethiye Mosque is located at Fethiye Avenue , on Felhiye Medresesi Slreet . It was originally a church called (Pammakarasistos) that was built in the 13th century by one of the Byzantine state , Mikhail Glabas Tarkaniotes . It originally consisted of two churches one of which is smaller than the other , and they are located side by side . The main church is the most important section . Glabas was buried in the parakkleison (side corridor) dedicated to Christ , and is the second church , which was added to the building in 1315 by his wife Maria who was also buried in this place after her death . Pammakaristos church was converted later into a mosque by the Ottomans under the reign of sultan Murad III during the Iranian war . As a consequence , part of the apse was removed and a niche (mihrab) was built . Also a minaret and medresse were added to the building . The structure became a museum in the republic era , after the American Byzantine Institute uncovered the frescoes and mosaics inside the building in 1955 . Columns were built to replace the arch that was built by the Ottomans to restore the building to its original shape . Today , the mosque is opened again for worship , while the parakkleison section of the building is a museum . The south chapel (parakkleison) has a cross plan with a dome measuring 2 . 30 meters on the naos , a gallery and a narthex . The external walls are made of stone and bricks , typical of the Byzantine architecture . The inscription in the southern side states that the church was built by Glabas . At the entrance , there is a well-preserved frescoe on the wall with "three wise men" . The dome from inside as well as the interior walls of the parekkleison are covered with mosaics dating back to the 14th century . The museum is open from 09:30 am - 4:30 pm except on Wednesdays . |
