Nusretiye Mosque



Native name: Nusretiye Camii Nusretiye Mosque meaning “Victory” is located in Necati Bey Street in Tophane Neighborhood of Beyoglu District on the Western shore of the Bosphorus. It was constructed by Mahmud II (1784-1839) between 1823 and 1826 by architect Krikor Balyan, as part of a larger project to rebuild the Tophane artillery barracks that were burnt down by fire. The mosque was built in celebration of the sultan's victory over the rebellious janissary troops in favor of a new western-style army (this is known in Ottoman history as Vaka-i Hayriye or the auspicious event).
