Turkish Name: Panagia Muhliotissa Kilisesi
Panagia Muhliotissa Church is located right beside Fener Greek High School across the west door . It is the only church that has remained from the
Byzantine
period and still functions today . The church was built in the 13th century as Maria , the daughter of Emperor Michael Palaiologos VIII (1261-1282) , designated her own land for the church to be build on . Panagia Muhliotissa Church was damaged by the fires three times in 1633 , 1640 and 1729 , however this has led to its extension in its west and south sides during repair works .
The building has a cloverleaf plan . On the middle of the building , there is a high tambourine dome with bricks on it . There are also half domes covering the other parts of the building . On the east of the main area , there are a wooden Iconostasis , despot chair and ambon . They are ornamented with herbal motifs that can be seen engraved or in reliefs . On the lower line of the Iconostasis , the icons are silver-covered works ornamented in reliefs .
