Native Name: Misir Çarşı
The Spice Bazaar , 'Mısır Çarşı' , or Egyptian Bazaar is located in Eminönü . It is a large covered shopping area and is considered the second largest covered bazaar in the city after Grand Bazaar . Here many goods belonging to the east are sold , like Fragrances , Spices , dried fruits , nuts and seeds , lokum (Turkish Delight) and many other edibles and spices . Probably , this bazaar is named Egyptian Bazaar because originally the spiced sold there during Ottoman period were mostly brought from Egypt .
The Spice Bazaar has an 'L' shaped plan . The main entrance of the bazaar is located in the southwest corner , facing Yeni Mosque . The bazaar consists of 88 vaulted rooms , nearly all of them are divided into an upper and lower story . There are monumental gateways at the end of both halls . The original structure of the bazaar was designed by the chief architect Koca Kasım Ağa , and was completed in 1660 . Originally rents from the shops in the bazaar were intended to support the Yeni Mosque .
